The World’s First ‘PR Land’ Theme Park to Open? April 22, 2009

Stumbelled across www.diggerland.com reading the first UK edition of Wired magazine (worth a read). And it has inspired me. I love the idea of turning jobs into leisure parks.
So stand by your beds, because I’ve hatched a new plan to open the world’s first ‘PR Land’ theme park – but I could use some feedback on a few of the ‘rides’ that may feature.
This so far:
-
‘Press Release-a-tron’ Buckle Up. Can you devise an angle, quote, message and eye-catching headline – then write distribute and follow up before the deadly deadline? Watch out for the evil client-approval process!
-
‘The Schmooze House’ Dare you enter The Schmooze House? Can you track down journalists before your fellow visitors? Will you beguile them with your witty banter and irresistible news pitch? But beware! Don’t ’schmooze’ them when they’re on deadline. They bite back! Grrrr!
-
‘Blue Sky Brainstorm World’ How wacky can you be? Park a taxi on the top of the Eiffel tower? Suspend a client MD upside down in his boxers from a football stadium floodlight? Welcome to Blue Sky Brainstorm World. A fantasy world where there’s no such thing as a bad idea!
-
‘The Big News Coverage Dipper’. Watch as your .. OK, bored now.
So – is it a winner?
I’ll get my coat.

Even though Tweetdeck and 12seconds have long been cozy bed mates, today marks a new level of commitment; Twitter’s most popular desktop client and its online video clone are now making 12second babies.12seconds is announcing that Tweetdeck now supports their new authoring API
in the latest release, so users will now be able to record – not just
watch – 12second videos without ever leaving the app. For those with
140 character or 12 second attention spans, it’s a marriage made in
application heaven.

PR 2.0 Which dinner party guest is your business? January 14, 2009

Indulge me if you will.
I’d like to invite you to a party. Probably a very dull dinner party. And three of the guests correspond to three different approaches to business communications.
Can you guess who they are?
Guest ONE. The shy one. In the corner. Doesn’t like to talk much. Doesn’t add to the conversation.
Guest TWO. This guy has lots to say for himself. In fact he’s more than happy to talk over other people the minute he thinks of something to say. He wants as many people as possible to know about him – even if they are not especially interested in what he has to say.
Guest THREE. This guy contributes to the conversation intelligently. He listens to others in the group. And responds with well-intended relevant timely responses and interjections. He follows the flow of the conversation and will even take part in asides with various groups of guests where he addresses their own particular interests in an informed and knowledgeable fashion
So who are these mystery guests?
Guest ONE is ‘Mr Don’t-do-PR’ if we notice him at all we probably conclude he’s dull an uninteresting.
Guest TWO? Well he is ‘Mr Old-style-PR’. The perception is that he likes the sound of his own voice. Some will find him entertaining but a proportion won’t like his style and find him – well – over bearing. It won’t stop him churning out more information about himself though.
Guest THREE is our charismatic charmer. People love the way he responds and reacts intelligently whilst setting his own fascinating agendas along the way. He doesn’t talk all the time – but when he does he talks to people who are interested and makes sure it’s worth listening too.
His name?
Mr ‘PR 2.0′
But does this clumsy analogy hold true?

“PR is so over”: why Dennis Howlett is right December 10, 2008

Dennis Howlett’s PR prophecy continues to engage PR professionals with some shrewdly worded responses. A good read.
I think there has to be a fundamental rethink of how agencies are staffed and structured in order to deliver the kind of services that clients are willing to pay for (at a profit for the agency), that meets the needs of the majority of journalists (like Dennis) and gives employees valuable and meaningful work that encourages them to do better, try harder and actually stick around in an industry that could really do with some fresh legs.
